So long, in fact, that she can't remember the last time she was here. She'll still be somewhat recognizable to anyone who might have met her the first time—she's grown her hair out to shoulder-length now, has a wedding band on her finger and is several years older, but she still has the suit and the body language of an FBI agent. An FBI agent who's gotten promoted to deputy chief of her unit and still hasn't accepted that transition. Janet spent fifteen years taking orders from a boss whom she loved and now she is the boss. Or one of them, because her partner Michael Davis is actually the one in charge.

She suspects that's why her door might have reappeared in her life. Her entire world has changed and even though it's settled there's a constant awareness that nothing will ever be the same again. The dynamic of the team with her and Michael at the top is very different from when Anthony Brennan was the only leader, and the two of them are semi-regularly continuing to second-guess themselves because they want everything to stay perfect. Brennan once snarked that he knew more than some other agents had forgotten and now they're starting to think it wasn't a a joke. Plus, one of their colleagues has just left to take her own promotion and now there's a new agent everyone is having to get used to. Which is Janet's fault because she offered him the job.

But if work is chaotic, at least she has the home life she built for herself to keep her from completely going crazy. Janet—with Michael's insistence—has continued to put effort into having a personal life. The wedding was obviously the most important part of that, not only accomplishing the goal she had wanted but also silencing her mother's complaints that she was nearly 40 and hadn't settled down yet. But she's still got hobbies that don't involve chasing white-collar criminals, like her no longer secret acting hobby. She just didn't think that stepping into other dimensions or whatever this is (she never bothered to totally figure it out) was going to get put on her schedule between work shifts and dance lessons.

She thinks the Nexus is giving her a different kind of break from juggling everything. The only problem is that she doesn't know if anyone she recognizes is even still here, or what she's supposed to do after her very long absence. The entire place could've changed while she was gone. Or it might not have changed at all. She decides to do the sensible thing and simply ask and see who answers.

"Can anyone fill me in on what I've missed in the last, um, has it been years?"

[ OOC: Bringing Janet back after an extended period of inactivity to see if there's still anyone interested in playing with her. I've been away dealing with severe health and family issues, the latter of which are still going on, so I apologize in advance for any slow tags and would just ask that replies not include any medical stuff, and I will be omitting anything like that from Janet's responses as well. Since it's been so long since she's played here, please feel free to ask for clarification or more details. I also have her biography here for anyone who hasn't played with her yet. Also apologies for this wall of text but happy to be back! ]

comments

The blue crystal that was fused to his body was gone, though his skin had a pale, almost bluish tint to it now. He was more haggard, his body more withered, his expression bordering on panic.

So much had happened. So much. His eyes looked around, pleading for someone to share these burdens with. But which ones? He could ask so many questions. What do you do after toppling a government to make sure a better one takes its place? How do you defeat a rampaging god? How do you defeat a rampaging god when the person you love most is now inside that god?

And those questions may very well come up in conversation. But The Prophet dared to be selfish for a moment first, crying out with a fear that now weighed heavily on his soul. "Is... Is immortality a blessing or a curse?"

comments

This would be a sign to even the most mundane of people that she is different.

Those with magic or strong spirituality, or divine beings will see even more. It's a portal with a black center and for the longest time, it's pulsated with swirling fingers of white light. It's fairly nondescript as portals go, and while the air around it tingles, any attempts to go through the portal simply lead… well, to the back side of the portal.

Today, it hums.

Today a wave of not-quite purple washes through the swirling arms, and the hole opens up to a library.

A library with a tiefling inside it, who pokes his head through, looks around for a moment, then withdraws.

A few minutes, then an hour passes as the portal goes dormant once more, no sign of the tiefling or his library visible through the center. Time ticks by, minutes and hours passing by before finally, the portal sparks once more.

This time, when it opens, the center of the portal is reinforced by a golden metal frame, and the tiefling comes through with a satchel laden with books and scrolls, dragging a table full of mechanical and alchemical contractions behind him. There's a giddiness to his movement and he grunts and curses the table where he wants it, even when he has to frantically rescue some of the instruments from falling. Then, once everything is settled exactly how he likes it, the real fun begins.

At least for the tiefling.

He spends a few moments recording readings from the array of instruments and meters, muttering excitedly to himself before plopping on the ground and digging through his satchel. Amidst the scrolls and books, he finds one of the many pamphlets explaining the Nexus and its rules. Regarding it with narrowed eyes, he pulls out an hourglass and sets it aside, returning his focus to his research.

The hourglass is flipped three times before the tiefling looks up from his work, tail swishing on the ground behind him, and he poses his questions.

"Has anyone here determined what happens if you don't ask a question? How long can you go without asking a question before something happens? Why is a question required? How poignant must the question be to be considered acceptable? Is a simple "How are you?" enough, or must it be philosophically intriguing?"

There's a pause in the tiefling's barrage as he scrunches his nose, scowling deeply at nothing. Then he sighs, pinches the bridge of his nose, and relaxes, adding on his final question. "I suppose I might as well ask if anyone has seen a man named Lorroakan, by any chance? Her eyes meet with the first passerby she spots, addressing them with an uncharacteristically giddy energy.

"I just got the most wonderful news. It's a novelty in itself; moving pictures are not common in his world, but there's something in his gaze that suggests wry recognition. Takes a paladin to know a paladin, perhaps.

Of course, Zevlor is no longer a paladin.

If you've seen a tiefling before, the stranger's species ought to be easy enough to identify. His skin is a warm ruddy color that does not appear on a human, and there are odd ridges along each cheekbone. His eyes are yellow, luminous. In low light there appears to be an actual flicker of flames behind them. The twin horns on his head are spiky, quite long and backswept. It's easy to imagine him literally clashing heads with others like him, battling like rams.

Between all that, and the long spade-tipped tail, he cuts a distinctive figure. He won't thank you for mistaking him for a demon, but he won't be able to blame you, either.

"When I was a child, I was taught that when I failed at something, I was to get right back up and try again. It's good advice when you're a child, and your failures are low-stakes. But now I'm an old man, and a single mistake can cause...unfathomable loss." His voice, which was steady and calm at first, thins to a fine-honed edge at those last two words. Whatever's going on in his head, he's underselling it.

"And yet the state of my world is such that no one can sit on the sidelines now. Doing nothing would be worse than trying and failing again. I know that. So how do I force myself to get back up?"

((Loki-mun here! Spoiler warning: I am taking Zevlor from between Act 2 and Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3 here, and also taking a lot of backstory from the Descent into Avernus book.))

comments

Many of its residents had gone indoors to get some sleep, although there are those who are still awake. Whether it is because they intend to stay up late at their homes or because their workplaces requires them to remain awake and active at this point in time. But regardless of they’re asleep or awake, something unusual happens at midnight. As soon as the clock hits 12:00 am, a strange, yet calming music starts playing within the background of the Nexus's plaza.

For those who tries to find the source of the music, they may get greeted by the sight of the new arrival himself. The newcomer was a tall humanoid entity who closely resembles a marionette but with a skeletal body and fingers that are more akin to tentacles. The nightmare animatronic walks down the streets as he heads towards the center of the plaza itself. In his left hand was the pamphlet that explains everything he needs to know about this strange dimension that he ended up in.

Nightmarionne had mixed feelings about his current predicament. On one hand, the antiviolence field is actively preventing him from getting too close to any of the locals, given his malicious nature. On the other hand, seeing them flee from the very sight of his appearance was more than enough to entertain him.

Right now, he may be seen in parts of the plaza that has the most people around. With notable examples being shopping malls, restaurants, movie theatres etc.

For those who mustered enough courage to approach him, they may get a question posed to them by Nightmarionne himself.

"Wh-What is it that you-u-u f-fear the most about the Ne-Nexu-us?"

[OOC: bigpoofymammoth's player here with another muse for FNAF's 10th anniversary. Between a job in one universe, and everything in his own, there was no time. There wasn't much time for anything. This place was quiet and he got a coffee and started to walk the plaza to clear his mind. He'd lost track of time quickly and where he was walking though he could still hear the plaza very clearly.

The noise of people was drowned out by a pitiful sound of squeaking, or growling, maybe it was both. The Dogs had cared for the animals in all the abandoned zoos of Hunger City long ago. To this day they all kept animals, many were the descendants of those first animals. Damien knew a lot of animal sounds but this was not familiar but more importantly the sounds reminded him of pain.

He followed the sound to a mottled bird? It looked sort of like a bird but with teeth and the size of a medium dog. He could see it was hurt and squatted down to check on it. The snapping didn't anger him at all.

"Shhh.. little one." Damien whispered and gently pressed the head away while looking over the injury. It looked bad on the downy feathers but underneath looked superficial. Watching the the teeth he dug out a cream he carried that numbed pain and disinfected wounds. The bird was watching now, sniffing at the cream on his hand before he gently dabbed it on the cuts down the side and thigh. It twitched away and Damien frowned because he didn't like seeing pain despite what his jobs had always been.

"There." Damien stepped away while wiping off his hand. He froze when he heard a snorting little sound and looked back to see the bird hobbling up on its feet toward him. Damien watched it limp over and sit heavily against his calf.

"Alright." He sighed at it like a child begging to be carried. This time there was no biting as he picked it up and cradled it in his arms. The bird was surprisingly light and felt skinny under the fluffy downy feathers. Well, he had another foundling. It wouldn't be his first human or animal in the past few years. After a few minutes he was back in the plaza and worried about just how skinny the animal in his arms felt.

The first person he could approach was going to get the question at the forefront of his mind. "Do you know what bird this is?"

comments

It's one of those too-humid summer nights where the sky looks deep blue and the lamplight looks orange, and you can't hear yourself think for the sounds of crickets and cicadas, and you think you might just go to bed early, but then you realize it doesn't get dark until nine in the evening so you're already up late.

Two dark figures with pale, shimmery hair are wandering down the main thoroughfare. One, shorter (much shorter) and curvier, is chattering alongside the song of bugs and nightingales:

"...and that's a really good reason not to become a mindflayer if you ask me. Especially for you. You'd never be happy just eating one thing."

The larger of the pair is just following indulgently for the moment, but there's a definite hint they're both prowling. Or maybe they just always look like they're prowling, because drow.

"So I think anywhere that has lights on and will take our gold is probably worth trying, anyway. Hells, anything but more wine. I'm never gonna touch rosymorn red again. It's always going to smell like fried kobold to me. Upon arrival, he had taken his time to read all the pamphlets that gave out a brief summary of his current situation. Don't get him wrong, he's still quite shocked when he suddenly ended up in another dimension altogether. But at least he's adapting to this predicament much faster than most would've expected.

He took some time to wander a bit around the central Plaza. From there, he met quite a large range of people originating from various different times and places. Most of them seem to be human in appearance, but there are also those who are visually distinct from them. He wondered how they've adapted to their arrival in a place completely unfamiliar to them.

At one point, he can be seen observing one of the statues within the Plaza. If anyone happens to be passing by, he might pose a question to them.

"What was it like to find yourself a new home in another place?"

[bigpoofymammoth's player here, bringing in another muse to the Nexus. He had lost Eurydice, again, and it was all his fault -- again. He looked down at the ground, then fell upon it, weeping.

The world was so cruel, he thought. He knew so little of it, but he knew that much to be true. He would never see his love again. He sobbed and sobbed, tears streaking down his face.

"Why...?! Why?!" he cried out, his voice echoing and then getting swallowed by the howling wind.

He pounded the cold ground, as if that action could somehow bring her back. He had finished his song, but now she was gone, and Orpheus felt lost forever.

Eventually, his sobbing subsided, and he slowly rose to his feet. When he blinked back the last of his tears, he was struck by how...different the world looked. In fact, it looked so different that he wasn't sure where exactly he was. He picked up a small pamphlet on a nearby bench and flipped through it. A meeting-place of worlds...unusual. Was this Hermes' doing, somehow?

Orpheus began walking, his lyre strapped to his back. He looked around at various strange-looking people and creatures, all of whom seemed non-threatening, but still very, very odd.

Well, he thought, if you can't beat them, might as well join them.

"Does...does anyone want to hear a song? I've been working on one."

comments

That's what getting caught up in reality can do to you: busy with a handful of high-profile cases, coping with the aftereffects of said cases and her own desire to save everyone, plus working toward her boss's inevitable retirement. Surprisingly. it's the last one that bothers her the most. Janet is used to dangerous situations and she's been through her fair share of emotional stress. But a workplace without the man who handpicked her and stewarded her career, that feels like being on a tightrope without a net.

That means she doesn't complain or seem too confused when her door appears and deposits her in the Nexus plaza one more time. At least it's after she's gotten home from work so she's changed into jeans and a Washington Nationals T-shirt (it is baseball season after all!). She takes her time to walk around this time, taking the place in to see what's changed. Wondering how many of her old acquaintances are still here from her last appearance or if she might make some new friends. Janet has never been a frequent visitor to the Nexus, but she still cares about the people she meets here. And truthfully, she can always use new friends, because she tends to feel alone more than she likes to admit.

But that's the kind of existential thinking she pushes out of her head as she glances about, tucking her hair back behind her ear. She takes in the scenery until she's walked far enough to get out of people's way but not too far away from the action; the interaction is her favorite part of being here, after all. She finds a bench that has an excellent sight line back to the plaza and decides to stretch out her legs and relax while coming up with the inevitable question. This time, it's one she's sure everybody is going to have different answers to: "When did you start feeling grown up?"

comments

Today is the longest of those sessions, settling into the outside seating of a bustling cafe.

None of the chaos behind her warrants any sort of attention, rather, she's completely blocked out the sounds of rattling dishes and scrambling workers. Diverted between a cup of tea and a stacks of books on different scientific topics, she's submerged herself in the task of gathering information. However, the snacks the cafe offers do help to alleviate any frustrations she might be hiding.

Furrowing her brows at a particular chapter in her book, she closes it and takes a moment to reflect.

"I don't understand the mystery of this place. Not a single book details the creation of the "Nexus" or how it came to be. So how does it draw people into it? Why do people come here?" The question was intended to be directed inward, but ever her thoughts tend to slip out audibly at times. Perhaps a bit of conversation will quell her curious mind for the next few hours.

comments

The Nexus does that sometimes, rearranging terrain and buildings when you're not looking. Twisted trees sprout here and there, and he's found enough deadwood to stoke a roaring bonfire bright enough to be seen from miles away, the white snow reflecting the blaze into a million glittering sparks. The smell of cooking meat wafts nearly as far, mingled with woodsmoke.

Despite the warmth of the fire, Jake has not shed many of his layers, bundled up in custom-made winter gear made to fit his nine-foot frame. Only his face and tail are bared by design, his gloves temporarily removed to tend to the skewers of meat being roasted by the flame. His bow and arrows sit to one side, far enough away to not risk catching fire, bloody arrowheads boasting of a successful hunt.

Should anyone come by his fire, Jake smiles, baring sharp teeth. Large moon-like eyes scanned the odd space, eyeing the myriad types of couches and places to sit. He wore hooded white paneled robes, trimmed in silver and red; layered and suitable for traveling, complete with worn leather boots and warm trousers. The head of a wooden staff poked up above his shoulder, appearing like a natural branch curling around a gently glowing green crystal. Beaded charms hung from it and tinkled softly with movement.

The figure had feline features, from the distinct facial markings and pointed tufted ears poking up from the barely held back mane of snow white hair to the long twitching tail of the same color. Shivering slightly in the chill air, the White Mage headed across the plaza to search for a warmer place to sit and regroup. Boots crunching in the thin layer of snow, he paused only long enough at a nearby cart to get a large hot drink. A mocha, it was called. The pamphlets proved true and the seller took their offered gil with no comment.

Sipping the bittersweet concoction, Kohja'ra continued on, eyes falling onto a sign that proclaimed 'Keldran Gardens'. Intrigued, the miqo'te entered the doors that swished open smartly at his approach.

It was like entering into another world. So much so, Kohja'ra wondered if he was still in this 'Nexus Crossings' place or if he was somewhere else entirely. The buildings architecture was completely alien to him. Stepping through the entranceway and into the large cavernous space, all he could do was stare in complete awe. Was this place run by Magitech? It didn't seem like it was Garlean or Allagan in nature. The building was larger than it appeared from the outside, stretching into the distance and filled to the brim with plants of every description and an abundance of life.

Inhaling deeply of the heady scents of untold varieties of growth, the White Mage half stumbled over to a nearby bench; almost not watching where he was going due to how engrossed in the colorful surroundings he was. It was here that he sat for a long while in contemplative silence. He was aware of other garden visitors but was too deep in his thoughts and surroundings to pay any attention. Finally, he raised the now lukewarm mocha to his lips to sip as if remembering he still held it.

"How do you keep going?" He found himself asking. He felt a little odd, but followed the advice of the pamphlets nonetheless. "What drives you to pick yourself up and keep going. Keep fighting, when all seems lost?"

comments

Granted, that's hardly unusual. There are predatory entities of all kinds here, and by and large they've learned to play nice, but this one is very New, and there is something about him that looks exceptionally dangerous.

A massive wolf, he is easily the size of a Midgardian three-bedroom house. His fur is oily black, with highlights of blood and frost that seem to be a part of him. He smells of ashes and death, and the green of his eyes is far too bright, feverish. It's not just that he looks like a dangerous animal, though. His body language, for anyone that knows canines, is tense, fearful, like a cornered stray ready to snap.

Look, he's had a rough day.

The antiviolence field is working overtime on this one, because not only is it protecting the people around him from a sudden lunge, it's keeping anyone from bumping into him accidentally, as if in recognition of his hair-trigger mental state. Even leaves blowing towards him swerve away as if pushed aside.

You know, 'dog' spelled backwards is 'god'.

"What do you do with a broken chain?" Is his question. Yes, he speaks, and his voice rumbles, almost making the ground shiver beneath his paws. Nice place."

The Doctor now walking through the Plaza, hands jammed inside the pockets of his pinstriped brown trousers with matching suit. He just wanted to get a feel of the new world he'd stepped into---or another dimension, since he'd been wanting to meet up with Rose and Mickey back at their flat. But, he'd ran into some trouble with the dimensional stabiliser and--BAM! He'd ended up here inside the Nexus. Was there a reason for this? Perhaps.

He sat at one of the benches and looked up at the sky, noticing a few cloud formations. At least he hadn't ended up on a barren, desolate planet or inside a black hole. That could have been bad. Very bad. This Nexus seemed like a nice place---almost like Earth in a way. Now, to meet the inhabitants. That was the big thing for the Doctor, who was a social butterfly when the need took him. The temptation to visit the many shops, taverns and other such places were tugging at the Doctor, as he directed his question to one and all.

"What's a Timelord to do in a place like this?"

comments

Paul Atreides isn’t particularly used to snow, but he doesn’t seem that bothered by it either, wearing a coat to keep out the cold and holding a small bag of meaty chunks. Occasionally he tosses one to the griffins, who eagerly snatch it.

He’s careful only to bring out animals who have tolerance for the winter - Paul himself can adjust to it, but it took him a little time and he is still learning things about the season. Not so much serious things, since this winter doesn’t seem to be so serious. He’s more interested in the ways people entertain themselves. Oh, he knows about snowball fights and Yule goats, but his hunger for knowledge is never easily satisfied.

Paul rubs one of his griffin friends under the chin and rewards it with a piece of meat, then turns to anyone who approaches him. “Tell me, what is your favorite thing to do during this time of the year?”

comments
