nexus_crossings | Trash or Treasure?

Someone's made a bit of a mess in a little out of the way corner of the main drag of the plaza. An entire picnic table has been taken up with electronic bits and bobs that sit in stacks that don't seem to make much sense to a passer by, but definitely seem as though they were organized in some manner by whoever gathered all of this junk. In front of the table a cardboard box is stuffed to the brim with wires and cords of every kind.

HDMI? USB? A weird curly cord with a plug shaped like an octopus? It's all here and then some. It's hard to know if someone's organizing a donation to a local recycling center or setting up the multiverse's strangest tech themed garage sale.

Eventually Peter shows up (don't ask where he showed up from, the kid has a habit of dropping in when you least expect it) dragging a beat up toolbox over to the table so he can start poking around at his findings. He'd thought there'd been one back at the clubhouse and was very pleased it hadn't grown legs and walked off since the last time he'd checked.

Anyone who wanders close enough to inspect or greet him gets met with the same dirt streaked grinning face.

"Hey, can you hand me that screwdriver just over there?"

"I mean, yeah mostly." Jeans don't need to be washed super often which is pretty handy on saving money for the laundromat. The screwdriver is quickly put to work in removing the case off an old CRT monitor so he can poke around at the back of it.

"I'm trying to see if any of the parts in this stuff are still working. Salvageable, maybe." If they are, he's got free stuff to maybe tinker at new gadgets with. "I like to recycle electronics where I can."

"Do you? I know of a few different warehouses that I have been cleaning up..." She means kicking butt and taking down gangs. "Where there are a few electronic parts left behind."

"You want first dibs?"

"Oh, neat." It's probably for the best that Peter reads between those lines and doesn't ask too many questions. Even if he knew, it's not as though his extra curricular activities are much different.

"I mean, that would be Awesome actually I just." He glances aside a moment. "Are they dangerous?"

"Don't worry. I will keep the extra dangerous parts for myself." Because Harley does have her own hobbies too. "You can take anything on the not-dangerous scale."

This is a damn good offer. One Peter's not likely to see again anytime soon. He might be able to improve on some of his gadgets depending on the kinds of electronics Harley's talking about here.

"So long as I wouldn't be stealing anything, I sure don't mind going in to clean up a bit."

"Are you going to be concerned if the stuff was stolen beforehand... cause I am sort of liberating it from con men and bad guys." Harley wants to make sure he is comfortable with accepting the goods before finalizing the deal.

Oof.

This is a tough call. Harley can tell Peter's waffling on her. This kid's conscience is pretty squeaky clean. The sort they make after-school cartoons about.

"I...don't suppose it's all that viable to return it to its owners then..."

"Even if the original owners would put the material to bad use?" Harley pops a bubble.

"Wait, the original owners were bad guys too?"

Wouldn't that be incredibly dangerous to steal from a criminal in the first place? Like, better for the populace as a whole Peter supposes but...

"Bad guys can own stuff too!" Harley laughs softly.

"Listen... their plans for this stuff was all bad. That is why I am taking it away from them, so they can't hurt other people."

"If you can do good with it, there is no place better for it. I wouldn't know what to do with it. Besides make jewellery or decorate my outfits with junk."

"I mean I know that, it's just....logistically speaking stealing from bad guys to do worse stuff seems like a poor business model and I'm starting to understand why they might have gotten in over their heads."

But Harley's dealing with that. It just leaves...the junk.

"I mean, if the police wouldn't be using it for evidence, I suppose..."

"Ever seen an evidence room in a police station kid? Sometimes they get so much stuff, that it stays there for days... weeks... months... years."

"I am sure you can get more use of it anyway. Not like it would solve any crimes."

"Not with me actually bringing the bad guys to the cops to lock up."
