A lot of the Uchiwa family lived far away from where the twins had grown up. Their parents had both come to the United States for higher education, their father Itaru first and their mother Chichi following nearly a year later. They had not originally planned on staying so far away from Japan or their respective families, but opportunity struck. And so did a set of twins.

“Even our extended families are not that large. However, living across the world as they do, we do not see many of our aunts, uncles or cousins very often.”

“Yeah, and Papa’s side way more than Mama’s side.” Minoru added. “It’s like after Grandpa Chikao passed away, everybody just kind of went their separate ways.”
