There is an uncanny mixture of fear and guilt on her face, as if she has taken personal responsibility for the folly of her people. But there is relief, too, that Adam understands what it's like for her to be torn between two worlds. "I'm glad you understand. It'd be so easy to give up, but it wouldn't feel right."
