Her eyes widen in sympathy at the news. The Jim she knows must never have told her. "Oh, Jim... I'm so sorry... that must have been hard for your mom, but she shouldn't have abandoned you like that." That's not what a family does. She can't imagine one of her parents losing the other and then taking it out on her.
