There's two ways he can take that, and he considers his answer carefully. "If you mean back in the twentieth century, I don't know. If you mean once they were found more recently, it isn't legal or right to kill helpless prisoners." He's not going to say that the head of Starfleet thought they might be useful, because that's part of what his superiors have deemed classified. No matter how much he despises what Admiral Marcus did.

As much as he doesn't like talking about his family issues, it's better than talking about Khan. "There's a lot to forgive and forget on both sides." He knows damn well he's not blameless in this, even if most of his shithead attitude came from the completely excusable immaturity of being an actual child at the time.
