The Start of the Storm

The god hosted Yule party left the Nexus in the state of beautiful Winter Wonderland. With the snow falling softly and steadily, and the beautiful festive lights twinkling in the darkness, the Nexus is left with a sense of serene nostalgia hanging in the cold air. This peace and joy clings to the streets for several weeks, buoying everyone’s mood as they look back on the past year and forward to ringing in the new one.

It starts in the Wilds, and the outskirts. The cold air suddenly feels like it freezes everything it touches in an instant. Light doesn’t quite pierce the gloom. Gentle snowfall becomes thick and falls hard. One or two people looking for shelter from their uninhabitable homes isn’t too noticeable. People can still enjoy their pretty Winter, blissfully unaware. Pipes freeze solid, paths become impassable, power cuts out, simple walks become baffling in the poor visibility. Soon it’s not one or two people, it’s many, it’s families. There are people coming in, bloody, bruised and scared, saying they were chased. Eventually the kindness of friends and strangers becomes strained. Spare rooms are packed to the brim and the storm that stays just shy of the bizarre torches somehow seems to have a slow, but unmistakable march closer towards a point where the Plaza, Industrial sector and Downtown meet. On top of that, people are complaining about PINpoints acting up or portals freezing over.

Streets are becoming packed full of people with far more problems than solutions. Huddling together and whispering about ghosts and monsters moving about in the shadows. In a place with no government, no organisation, no collaborative emergency services, chaos and confusion reigns supreme. And with chaos, comes panic. With confusion, comes frustration and anger. The Nexus is a powder keg waiting to blow.

That’s certainly how one Durant sees it. As a manager, Isidor is keen on organisation and order. Both things that are lacking in the Nexus at the moment. Groups pop up to help, but struggle to communicate effectively, or work together. Some people get free food twice, some people are still waiting for some at all. It’s madness, and Isidor can’t stand it. Particularly because she, her brother and sister-in-law are stuck here. So, when nobody else takes the mantle, Isidor Durant takes it upon herself to inject some order into this scrum.

In her fur hat and long coat, leather gloves and thick boots, Isidor can be seen directing people this way and that. There’s something about a confident person taking charge that means people instinctively defer to them. She becomes the point of contact quite easily, with people soon taking her direction regardless of whether or not they know her. Under her instruction, people are directed to a building that has tables set up, queues in front of them, and volunteers behind them taking names and telling people where to go. It might still be chaos, but at least now it’s organised chaos.

The question is: Where will your character go?

"I've been a little bit of everything myself," Delia explains, figuring clearing the air and listing off her skills might be wise, "I've been trained by the KDF in ground combat, although I generally prefer rifles as a usual rule," such as the one strapped to her back, "I'm a tactical and intelligence officer, and while it's not useful at the moment, also a pilot."

Might be useful later, provided they can get some kind of transport or ship going.

"Most of my experience in situations like this are usually more station and shipboard, but I'm quick to adapt and read situations as needed." As was proven by her quick assessment of need mere moments ago on the map. Delia's done a fair bit of exploring through the Nexus herself.

Being a pirate, as well has lent her a lot of relevant skills, as well.

Delia also doesn't point out that she, too, operates out of DS9, just about thirtyish years in Dax's future. Spoilers and Temporal shit. Ungh.

It's quite the list, but not necessarily all that useful out on the field. Although...Jim turns back to his maps and folds his arms over his chest. Something's out there ripping civilians and their own alike. With ease, even.

Delia's skills fall into a similar like as Jim's own do. He knows how to deal with that.

"We're trying not to spread it around much so as not to cause a panic, but there's something out there taking people out like it's a joke. We've got people trying to pin down who or what we're dealing with here but so far nothing's turned up. But they are stealing supplies. Every body we find is stripped of all their gear. Several shops have been broken in to as well."

"I have served at the helm of the USS Defiant as well, if there is a situation where two pilots could be used." Jadzia adds softly.

"If we do get any biological evidence of the somethings, perhaps I could study it to determine what we are dealing with?"

Jadzia studies the maps for a moment. "One of the previous hosts of the Dax symbiote was a treasure hunter, so I could call upon his expertise to scout a location. But I do not have any weapons with me."

"Unfortunately, I've got the one rifle and it doesn't really have a scope, so I can't play sniper too well yet either." Delia shrugs, "Got a Defense Force issue Tricorder, but it's having even more fits in this weather than it usually does here in the Nexus, have a few daggers, not much help except for maybe slicing up meat if we have to hunt for food."

Delia shrugs one shoulder, frowning as her eyebrows furrow. "If something's out there, though, knowing what it is and how it operates would go a long way into figuring out how to deal with it, kill or contain. What have you."

"I can scrounge up a pair of binoculars I'm sure. Or maybe the goblin outside could find a set easier, though I'm not sure what he'd ask for in price." Jim taps at his arm with the hand gripping tight to it from where they're folded in front of him.

"If you're both volunteering I'd ask you to work together. I need data on what these things are. It would go a long way if I had a pair of scouts who know what they're doing." He means no disrespect to Joshua or the people volunteering here but the Commander's of Starfleet and Delia's no slouch either. He trusts their credentials a bit higher than most.

"Sounds like a good plan." Jadzia smiles. It is honestly a pleasure for her to be receiving commands from the Captain Kirk. She wonders if this is the one that is friends with Rowan. That can wait until later.

Delia, meanwhile, considers Jim a friend, and competent at what he's doing, and an ally. In this case, she nods, frowning in thought, "I can work with that, getting more data period might be helpful, we need to know if this phenomenon," she gestures, arms wide, meaning the storm, winter, et cetera, "is naturally caused, or if something's pushing the weather to do this. So I'm definitely pleased to have you aboard, Commander."

A science officer, Delia definitely isn't.

"Visibility's poor as all hell, so binoculars probably aren't gonna do us much good anyway," beat, then Delia gives a little bit of a smirk, "Plus, I'd be better served with a telescope, all things considered, since, well." She gestures at her face, meaning the eye-patch.

A little humor to lighten the mood.

"Maybe we should start by asking around, seeing if anyone's seen this thing, or how it operates."

"Asking those who are here is a good idea. Maybe it even has a hunting ground." Jadzia agrees. "I have not been in the Nexus long... are there those here who are more reliable with their information, that we should start with?"
