closer to home

Snow and ice are nothing to a waterbender, so Katara wasn't concerned for that reason when she found herself knee-deep in a drift. What has her concerned is the fact that she'd just been on Ember Island, and she's pretty sure it never snows there. This looks a lot more like one of the poles, but how had she gotten there?

With swooping and twisting motions of her arms, she bends the snow around her, forming a brittle shield of ice to keep the wind away. Having just moments ago been in a tropical climate, she isn't dressed for the cold, though it's the biting wind that bothers her more than anything.

A not-too-distant howling coming in through the dark paired with the glow of firelight in the opposite direction makes it fairly easy to choose which way to go, and with her bending she creates a path of ice to slide across until she reaches the encampment.

She must look befuddled as she wanders about, a bright-eyed teenager dressed like an extra from a kung-fu movie asking weird questions. "Excuse me," she asks as politely as possible, "but is this the spirit world? I'm close friends with the Avatar, and I'm sure he'd be very appreciative if you would point me in the direction of the Fire Nation."

Mr. Slick looked curiously at Katara when she asked about the Spirit World.

"Ah, it's not the Spirit World," he shook his head, "This is the Nexus. It's a place connected with all worlds and dimensions. Folks can enter and leave the place and return to their home,"

"Ah, that would be a bit more difficult than how it usually is around here," Mr. Slick admitted, "We usually use PINpoints and portals to get home or we usually use the way we came through to get back. The portals and PINpoints are now actin' up. Some work properly and some are mighty unreliable while others aren't even workin',"

Mr. Slick gestured some of the people nearby.

It's why many are cooped up here," he admitted with a tired sigh.
