The door opened, letting out a tall and thin woman with a short cloak around her shoulders, Her ginger red hair billowed around her half shaven head and she turned around to look at something on the other side of the door frame. She was suddenly pulled back in, getting her to laugh quietly.
“All right, all right. I promise I’m fine.” Her Russian accent was tempered with the softness in her voice as she spoke. “I’ll be back again. It’s fine.”
She finally retreated into the Nexus properly and crossed her arms as the door closed and vanished. As soon as the door was out of sight, she nodded and squeezed her arms tight across her torso. She backed up slowly to the wall behind her and breathed heavily through the gas mask covering her face. She slid down slowly onto the ground.
“I’m fine. I’m really fine. Of course I’m fine.” She stuck one arm out and a flame burst to life from her fingertips. “It’s fine that he gets to still linger. Why wouldn’t that be acceptable, Voyevoda? He’s only your son!”
The woman rose to her feet and swung her arms out to either side. Her cloak billowed. Butterflies made of fire spread out around her in a swarm. She walked in circles, flames dancing up around her footsteps and slowly taking shape as she continues her pacing. They become a kind of snake trailing after her, weaving between her footsteps, almost trailing its way up one of her legs.
“He’s only the one who got me killed! Only the one who helped ruin the world even further just to try and fix it all! He’s never been good, never been in the right side, always betraying someone else for his precious king. I’m not- I’m not fine! I’m not- Not…”
Mantis stops in the middle of the pacing, the snake of fire climbing up her leg and slowly fading as it reaches the top of her leg. Her shoulders begin to shake. She sniffles quietly behind the mask.
“I don’t get it. I watched him die. I watched them all join me on the other side. When do I get to be over all of this?”
