nexus_crossings | +1 confused teenage boy

If anyone's around the plaza area, they'll probably bump into Djem; he's not exactly anything extraordinary, but he is new. At a first glance, he's a tall, sightly lanky teenage boy with a level of scruffiness that's been finely tuned over the years to annoy his parents. He has no idea where he is, but as far as he can tell, he's certainly not in Kansas anymore.

Well, California technically, but the point's still there.

If he was to ask a question, it would probably be the usual; 'where am I? where is this place? am I dreaming?' but for the time being, he's curious enough to begin to wander, taking a note of where he first found himself and which door apparently leads back to his room.

(ooc: hey all - Sophie/Grace mun here, with a new OC offering; this is Djem, he's 18 and is your usual run-of-the-mill teenaged nerd who also happens to be completely Deaf (he's not oral and isn't great at lip reading, but is fluent in ASL). I look forward to flinging him head first into this place :) )

He notices Wendla a few seconds before she looks up, and almost glances away when she does; until she waves at him. After a brief, awkward pause, he waves back with a small smile.

Well, it'd be rude not to, right?

She grins, excited. It's someone new!

Forgetting her ever-handy notebook and pen for a moment, she reverts to signing:

Hello! Are you new?

[ooc: She's from the Deaf West production of Spring Awakening, which actually ended up on Broadway for a limited run earlier this year!]

He has no idea where this place is or how he got here, but being greeted in sign by someone who isn't his sibling is a very pleasant surprise. He may or may not be terrible at hiding just how surprised he is, though it quickly becomes a wider smile.

Yeah, I guess? What is this place?

It's a place--

She pauses a moment, trying to figure out how best to explain the Nexus to a newcomer.

It is a very interesting place between worlds! I can come and go as I please, but not everyone can.

Wendla's noticed that there are some people here that, well, seem stuck.

He repeats the signs, his expression a good mix of complete confusion, and excitement. While he has no doubt he'll need to go home at some point, right now? This is amazing. An adventure, even.

'Interesting' is a pretty good word to use..what do you do here? Just..hang around?

I like to read! And watch the people here. If they know how to sign, I can learn about where they're from and what they do.

She holds up her notebook and pen.

I use this for those who don't know how to sign.

That's cool - I like reading too, and drawing. I usually end up using my phone if people can't sign; I can type almost as fast

It's good to know some other people here might know sign; he can count the number of people he interacts with on a daily basis who know ASL on one hand.

She grins.

While she grins, he blushes a little; such is the way of an awkward ~~potato~~ teenager who doesn't really interact with girls all that often.

People mostly - I like drawing faces a lot, expressions are always really interesting to try and put on paper.

If he had his sketchbook on him, he might show her, but alas he does not.

What kind of books do you read?

People are always interesting! And I like all kinds of books. Anything I can read and learn from.

She shows him a book from her little shoulder bag she carries with her--it's a high school biology textbook, simple enough, but Wendla is clearly enthralled by it.

This one is good.

She remembers something suddenly.

I have a notebook! Would you want to show me your drawing in that?

At least that means you're not hard to buy books for! I like fantasy, sci-fi, that kind of thing.

While he's surprised that it's a textbook she shows him and not a work of fiction, he doesn't comment on it. He doesn't really get how you can want to read a textbook for fun, but if she enjoys it, who's he to tell her otherwise?

When she offers her notebook to him, his brows rise in hesitation, but he finds himself nodding before he can say 'no'.

Yeah, okay - is there anywhere round here we can sit down? That might be easier

Fantasy? Like fairy tales? She's never met a boy who likes that sort of thing; Wendla is a little surprised.

She nods and points to a nearby bench, next to a small tree.

There!

Kind of - like 'The Lord of the Rings', that sort of thing

He follows her look to the bench and nods, walking with her towards it. He already knows what he's going to draw, but he can't say whether it'll be good. He's used to drawing when he's alone in his room, not when someone's watching.

I haven't read that book. Is it good?

She sits down on the bench, looking up at him expectantly.

So good, it's a classic. If I can get back home, I'll let you borrow my copy if you want?

Sitting next to her, he takes the notebook, expression asking permission before he does so. The drawing doesn't take very long - only about ten minutes or so, in fact - and when it's done he gives it a final check before he turns the page round for Wendla to see properly. The second his hands aren't occupied though, he's quickly putting in a disclaimer.

That's probably terrible - I mean, I can do much better, but you know...that gives you an idea.

Oh God why didn't he draw the tree?

Wendla's mouth kind of falls into a little "O" shape when she sees the drawing, and she stares at it a moment before putting the notebook down and signing back.

It's lovely! I love it! It's amazing!

She grins.

She's blushing a little as well--with pride.

I want to! I want to do it at college, maybe make comics or movies or something like that.

That seems like a long way off; for now he's just happy drawing what he likes and not being in heinous amounts of debt.

What do you do? What you in school or anything?

I'm in school! It's all right. We do a lot of reading--my favorite subject is science.

Wendla's developed a particular fondness for biology--how plants and animals work, that sort of thing.
