Wisdom begins in Wonder

She headed toward what looked to be a large building akin to something from back home, It was both an impressive and slightly comforting sight.
She scanned the area with her eyes, ears and other senses. Trying to make sure she was in the right place as she headed toward the stone steps. As well as keeping her eyes open for any hint or sign of her missing friend or any one who might know more about the nexus or other things of necessity and importance. Another part of her wondered if they might have a snack bar or vending machine that took the money she had on her as her tummy rumbled softly as she neared the large doors.

She wondered if there were a place for missing posters, and looked around for one as she cautiously looked around after poking her head in, looking for  a desk of some sort. "Ahem, excuse me, but I was wondering if there was a form or something to apply for a library card? " She half asks a bit rambly and nervous all of a sudden. She wasn't exactly sure why but she was worried for Sherlock and was in need of some information and uncertain about where and when to get things in this ever shifting environment.

Before anyone at the desk can answer Ashlynn's question, there is a loud clatter from behind and a staff member barking a frustrated, "YOU!" If she's quick in turning around, she'll spy the following:

  • an overturned cart that had been stacked with books
  • said books now all over the floor
  • an angry library staffmember who appears to be a robot fuming
  • a familiar cage and ratty scholar's cape disappearing swiftly behind a row of bookshelves

The robot actually shakes its fist after the escaping scholar, beeping rapidly and angrily (but quietly; this is a library, after all!) before turning to the task of picking up the spilled books, grumbling as it does.

Guess Micolash wasn't kidding about almost always being in the library. Who knows if the staff is always vexed with him though. Shall she help clean up the mess or chase after the fleeing Yharnamite?

If Micolash heard his name being said, he doesn't let it stop him. He darts off around the corner of the shelves, running surprisingly fast for a guy who acts so sleepy all the time.

"Is that his name?" chirps the robot, now with the cart upright once more. It starts picking up the books and stacking them carefully on it once more. "All I know is he's the fool who hides in here all the time after-hours. Not as much as he USED to, but." The robot librarian whirs a sigh not unlike a computer's cooling fan.

It then clicks and tilts the little ear-like panels on the top of its head. "Is he a friend of yours? Or family? Can you tell him to stop being such a menace? Squatting aside, his howling is disruptive and he comes in here acting drunk all the time. Bashing into things." The robot gestures demonstratively at the overturned cart and books. An apparent victim of said bashing.

Ever since his first introduction to it, the library had become like a fourth second home for Viatorus. Especially these days, when he was scarcely seen outside his office except for his forays to the library. It's as he's setting books down into the returns section that he hears the young woman looking for some help. He glances to the front desk which is, for the moment, empty. He can't allow the poor woman can't be deterred from the joys of reading, so he flattens out his jacket and approaches cautiously. It looks like she isn't the only one with a nervous demeanour.

"Uh-Um, yes. There is form to fill out. I-It's really very simple. I-Uh… No one is at the desk right now but I'm sure they'll be back soon if you want to start looking around. Or you can look for a librarian." A beat passes and he adds, "Maybe not the robot, if you see him. He's been… hm… distracted lately."

Since she doesn't seem to have any more questions, he turns back to his task, pleased he was able to help… But when he heads back into the library, she still looks as lost and uncertain as ever. Again he hesitates. Then, after running through what to say in his head, he puts on a shaky smile and approaches her again.

"Um, sorry. I, um. I'm not a librarian, but I do know this place rather thoroughly." He gestures to the doorway leading further into the building before his hands come together to fidget. "Could I, uh, maybe help you find what you're looking for?"

The robot plops down another stack of books once more onto the cart they belong on as it replies, "If you can catch up to him and talk him into being more careful, I'd be grateful. I'm tired of cleaning up his messes." The bot looks like it's about to let Ashlynn go, but then holds up a finger. "OH! And tell him to stop stashing food on the shelves! I found that apple he left uneaten in the astrology section and it was horrible. I can't stand decayed matter..." Makes sense, since it's a robot who does not have to worry about flesh or food.

"I'll take care of this." It shrugs at the cart and scattered books again. "Just-...Just go catch him. If you can, anyway. He's DEVILISHLY fast. Main reason I can never properly reprimand him." The mechanical librarian grumbles, sounding remarkably like a chugging printer or scanner.

The row the caged man had ducked into is empty, apparently having already dashed to the end and continued onto others. No wonder the robot can't keep up with the guy; on top of Micolash's swiftness, one has to navigate a borderline maze of books. Though his scent lingers in the area; he must not be far or must not have left this aisle too long ago. In fact, his scent gets stronger a few steps forward and to Ashlynn's left...

Once she looks in that precise spot, she'll spy a gap in the books where a pair of dark-ringed, pale blue eyes from the other side of the bookshelves are peering. The fact they're framed by iron bars is a dead giveaway as to who's doing the peeping.

"Is the metal man still looking for me?" Hello to you too, Micolash.

"If people would stop giving me food, I wouldn't have to hide it places!" He hisses the words back, whispering now that he knows the robot is still lurking nearby. "I never even ask for it. People simply hand it to me and it's impolite to decline..."

His eyes brighten suddenly though, and there's the sound of rustling cloth as he glances downwards. Fetching something from a pocket? "Oh! But once a man gave me this." He holds up an empty, crumpled Doritos bag. Uh. "I poured out the crisps for some birds but kept this amazing material! Listen to the sound it makes." He proceeds to crinkle it with both hands, eyes narrowing in what must be smile from behind those books. It's the simple things in life, isn't it?

[personal profile] grantuseyes 2017-10-07 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
The crinkling stops and Micolash wrinkles his nose in disgust as he lowers the bag to resume whispered conversation. "I would like no food, thank you very much. Asking me to pick a favourite, honestly. Would you ask a man which poison he finds most palatable? Which finger he prefers to sever?"

He sighs and there's another shuffling and rustling, putting that coveted Doritos bag back into his pocket. "No, no, the sooner I discover how to avoid the process entirely, the better."

His pale eyes go wide and he lurches forward in interest. His cage clonks onto the bookshelves separating them. He ignores this.

"I knew it!" He hisses excitedly. "The Kin has told me there was no other way to receive nourishment but by invasive means. But I knew there had to be another way!" Although his excitement doesn't blind him to doubt. Micolash narrows his eyes suspiciously as he continues, "Unless you speak of Blood ministrations. I trust I do not have to speak any further on why such a thing is verboten." What with that whole thing about some Holy Church putting corrupting Blood into the population and all. Hard to turn around on that one.

He listens patiently to her explanations, but the expression in his eyes is one of faint dismay. "I-...I know what an intravenous drip is. I'm not a complete fool." Micolash, rather than being offended, is confused and concerned! Does he look stupid to others? Stupid is the very last thing he is! He ran a college, for Kosm's sake...

Instead, his exasperation is saved for this talk of water, fluids, broths. He whines, "I thought you said it would nothing I would have to swallow. The Kin is already having me choke down...awful paste-like substances. And forcing me to finish entire glasses of water!" Wow, a whole glass. That's literally torture, right? "How can anyone stand this. This grotesque ritual? Mashing things with your teeth and spit. Swallowing the mess? Feeling it go down?!" His voice gets raised a little more as he goes on but crouches lower and looks sidelong when he hears an irritated stranger's voice further away shush him. Oops.

Micolash eventually sighs and shakes his head. Better to move onto Ashlynn's question rather than dwell on the horrors of eating food and drinking liquid. "I have not...wandered terribly far that way, but I believe this Dream has a marketplace? I have heard mention of currency, but not of what sort. People seem almost compulsive in handing out things such as snacks and drink, however." Ugh, now he's thinking about eating again. What a curse.

There is a young woman with a pile of books in her arms, patiently waiting by the empty information desk. It seems the library is short-staffed today. That, or the robot librarian is too busy dealing with a mess that a particularly unruly patron has seen fit to leave further back in the stacks.

She turns towards the other woman's voice and gives her a tentative smile. "There are paper forms, but, um... you need the librarian for that, and I haven't seen him for a while..." She shifts the weight of the books in her arms. "You can apply for one online, though. That's what I did."

"Sensory overload would be the best term for it, wouldn't it? The Kin insists I be without my cage when I am in his presence, and the world is a horrific swirl of input! Awareness that I am made of blood and bile and loathsome series of tubes and sacs, all framed in a cage of bone and flesh." His face is one of a man deeply disgusted as he drones this grim description of owning a body.

Micolash leans closer again, his cage not colliding this time, but the intensity of his eyes is a force unto itself. Every word spoken next is said with dire conviction and existential dread.

"I can. Feel. This BODY. DYING while my. Mind. SCREAMS. To ESCAPE."

The frightening gravity of this moment, however, is interrupted soon enough. The following brittle silence is broken by the gurgling of a nearby stomach.

Micolash finally blinks for the first time in minutes. "...Was that yours or mine."

"They do," she replies, more confidently this time. "There's also a terminal just around the corner where you can sign up."

Adia is not one to assume, but it sounds like this woman has at least a passing familiarity with the technology. But it doesn't seem like she's familiar with the library itself, and the librarian sure is taking his sweet robot time to get back to the information desk...

"Would you like me to help you get set up?" she offers. "It doesn't take long at all."
