Spidey's Charity Winter Fair!

Tis the season for giving and gifting, for doing right by your neighbors and strangers alike.

The Nexus is no stranger to parties and gatherings by now. Fliers have been put up--banners are ~~webbed~~ hung up around a sectioned off block of the Plaza inviting all and sundry to come partake in a charity winter fair. Its host zips between tables to help carry anything heavy or to make sure those who need it have access to power. Spider-Man might be a recognizable Hero back home, but here he's dwarfed in size and abilities alike by the powerhouse volunteers who are helping make his idea take shape in reality. Gods, otherworldly individuals of races Spider-Man can't even guess at--but people too.

So many more than Peter could have expected.

Soon one side of the street is awash in seasonal aromas as tables get assembled laden with pies, jams, and drinks ready to be served up to interested guests. Spidey makes sure to drop off a little bag of hand made sweets to one of the volunteers who brought her kids along to make sure they don't get fussy or left out of all the fun. His head spins when he thinks of how much grander this is than just the one or two tables he and Matt discussed when they were talking out plans. It's really happening.

He's quick to jump over to the other side of the street and grab up a snow shovel to clear away space for the spots being set up for entertainment. Every shovel full of snow he clears for a puppet theater can get dumped into a pile beneath a rigged up seat for a dunking booth of sorts. Already curious onlookers point and laugh, their voices carrying in the crisp air eager for the games about to be played.

In the center of the sectioned off block sits their headquarters for the event where tickets can be sold, raffles held, and a table set up for straight donations just next to it. The man behind it is far more calm than the young costumed man who leans up against the table to catch his breath once everything seems to be coming together.

Spidey's hopeful when he looks over his shoulder to ask, "How many folks d'you think are gonna come?"

Aarne is listening carefully as they walk. Though he's not a scientist he's very interested in music and the idea of knowing how music effected him; physically in the first study and seemingly mental or emotional in this new idea.

"Would I need to be sober?" That is the first question that pops into his mind but as he thinks more there are other options too. "Do you want to talk to the other Pagans? Vars does spiritual work before going on stage and the Danes do a lot of spiritual work."

He wasn't sure how much the others did on a day to day basis but there were a large number of Pagans on the tour. "I don't know how much the others but I know almost every musician has a spiritual routine before stage." The interest was definitely a yes from Aarne, at least.

“I do not know yet.” He replied about the element of sobriety. “I am still designing the hypothetical experiment itself and how best to gather the data. At this point, I am gauging interest.”

Which, it seemed, was positive on Aarne’s part.

“Is that why you asked me about wearing a monitoring device during the qualifiers?” Minoru asked as he fetched a couple of cups of hot chocolate.

“Yes, though, I understand why you declined. The last thing I wish to do is create suspicion of some kind.”

“Totally happy to wear it during a workout or something, but I don’t want to risk it in the actual competition. I mean, IRIS tech doesn’t exist in our world. What if they thought it was sone kind of performance enhancing thing? I don’t want to be accused of cheating!”

“Which I understand completely.”

Aarne listened to the discussion and nodded along.

"What about the people who think sex is spiritual?" There was a question because he knew it was true for more than himself. "I want to do this."

He also thought Vars would be very interested in this kind of research.

He thought about that for a moment.

“I likely have some of those brain waves recorded from the experiment too…” he nodded. There were certainly some notable heart rate spikes in the middle of the night that needed very little speculation. “Though, it would be interesting to explore whether that does, indeed, create an altered state of consciousness.”

He was actually curious what states were marked by transient hypofrontality and the switch to alpha and even theta waves, but he didn’t say that out loud. He did not want to prime a potential participant.

“Which means, it might be worthwhile to test you both sober and under the influence, now that you mention it.”

Aarne shook his head."It's not the same, just having sex and doing it with spiritual intent."

The rest of it though, he's very interested in. "I wonder if different things cause different outcomes. Mick always complains Akvavit makes him feel hot but he's not."

Aarne might not be scientific as Isamu but he's nearly as curious about the nature of being alive. "I wonder if whiskey and Akvavit are different?"

Now his mind is turning on all sorts of different combinations. Then he stops and furrows his brow. "What about Rekker and Vars' medications from the doctor?"

As Aarne elaborated on spiritual sex, Isamu cocked his head to the side. “I was not aware that there was, or even could be, a difference. I am well aware of the neurological changes that occur during sexual acts. There is quite a bit of tantalizing research in that area, if I may say so. But this would certainly be an interesting topic to explore.”

Minoru gave a shrug to that whole line of thought. He sipped on his hot chocolate.

“Far be it from me to encourage anyone to forgo necessary prescription medication for the sake of an experiment. As far as the psychopharmacology of the medications themselves, that has likely been studied at length as part of the approval process.”

At least, that was how it worked in his world. Something that he’d even had a little exposure to in graduate school.

"I think they studied Christian brains when they were talking to God or some religious experience." Aarne hadn't read it well enough. "Shouldn't it be more intense if it is sex for the gods?"

That was at least what Aarne imagined. Brain changes with sex, brain changes with religious experience, if both are the same time it should be even more intense.

"I didn't mean not taking them but how it makes it different." Aarne bit his lip nervously and then shrugged. "Bjorn talks about Rekker a lot and I'm curious about his medication."

Aarne admitted it but he felt awkward for wanting to know.

“It is difficult to understand what something does without having a baseline from which to compare it to. Every experiment needs a control. For example, measuring your biometric data during your everyday activities as well as when you were performing on stage.”

In other words, there would be little he could do to sate that particular curiosity. To test how the medication affected the experience, he would need to measure the experience without the medication. He could extrapolate, perhaps, comparing the experience to others who were not on the medication, but it would depend a lot on the data. And on multiple drug studies he would undoubtedly need to familiarize himself with.

“The topic of neurotheology is more fascinating than I had intended. I read a paper just a few days ago that demonstrated the same increased frontal lobe activity and decreased parietal lobe activity in both praying Catholic nuns and meditating Buddhist monks. But decreased frontal lobe activity in Muslims engaged in their specific prayers.”

How do other activities compare? How do the brain waves change? How does neurotransmitter release change? Those were the questions Isamu most wanted to answer.

"Vars routinely has to detox." Aarne had known him long enough to know that he didn't consistently take pain medications because he was trying not to become an addict which could easily happen with chronic pain.

That was not what almost got a scream from the Fin. "No one's studied pagans." It was almost a question but he didn't stop for an answer."We're all Scandinavian pagans. Even Joe and I think Viktor and Billy are ... accidently converting." Then his voice did get high and excited. "You could be the first person to do brain stuff on pagans."

At least in thier own world, maybe Isamu's too. Aarne was back to being just as excited as he was last time, when they bet. "Robert is pagan too, I think.. and um Dee but they aren't Northern pagans."

“Unfortunately, I have not examined nearly enough literature to know whether such studies exist or not. And in which worlds they may exist.” The IRIS database was infinitely impressive.

He fully expected that he would find something, even if it was only tangentially related - such as the shamanism or another pagan-like ritual experience. But for now, he didn’t know, and he admitted as much.

Minoru, meanwhile, snickered into his hot chocolate. The way these two got along was crazy.

“Which activities would be the most appropriate for measuring pagan religious experiences that induce an altered state of consciousness?”

Aarne didn't care if there were other studies, not really. He liked having attention and being part of studies like this triggered that part of his personality. "I bet none of them involved only musicians."

He wasn't letting go of this idea. Pushing his unruly hair out of his face He got a concentrated look and then squeaked, or maybe it was a scream. Who knew but the excitement came through. "We could have a Blót."

Now, he was out of control because this meant a huge party. Aarne wondered if Vars was here somewhere. The man was usually stoic but this might make him get crazy too. They all would. "Can you study and join the Blót?"

Isamu was not familiar with that word, and it showed. “I do not understand. What is a… a blot?”

Aarne grinned even if this wasn't part if his own practices they were close enough. "A Norse party."

Which he knew wouldn't satisfy Isamu but it was a start. "Um... March would be the time of Idunn and Frey. apples.. goat sacrifices. Feasts, drinking." Aarne paused and held back the splattering blood everywhere. "The Danes follow Idunn."

Which in Aarne's mind meant they had someone to preside over the blót. "They strengthen community and bonds."

“And this is a spiritual event?” Isamu asked, trying to connect all of the dots here - from apples to goat sacrifices to all of the things he undoubtedly recorded them doing already.

Minoru held back his laughter. At least for a little bit.

“Come on, Bro, not everyone can sit and meditate the way Mama does.” He snickered.

"Yes. It's..." Aarne struggled to think of what it might be like to someone who knew more mainstream religions. "...Thanksgiving, a saint feast and.. um.. a youth celebration if we were not pagans."

Aarne felt a jolt of excitement. Mikkel was the baby of the group and he was the one that would be the head of this feast. It made so much sense, perfection.

"It is meditative." Aarne starts giggling and glances at Minoru. "Everyone doesn't sit still while meditating."

“Yeah, some of us do it running and jumping from tall buildings.” Minoru grinned, still laughing along with Aarne. “Whether it’s textbook spiritual or not, it’s still going to be an altered state of consciousness for you to measure.”

Isamu couldn’t argue with that logic.

“All right. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” He was convinced, and also a bit curious as to how the various activities would stack up as far as brain waves were concerned. “Though instead of the sensors, an ambulatory microdose positron emission tomography scanner might provide better data…”

His voce trailed off as he pondered the equipment he would need.

Aarne's eyes glaze over when that long title of the equipment comes out but then he furrows his brow.

"Is that one of those brain hats?" He's not a scientist but he's heard about them. "Rekker mentioned some hat that looked at his brain."

Then he started laughing. "Is it... punk resistant." Aarne thought about the fights that were going to break out, more competitions between the more masculine and aggressive band members, but the thoughts were the same.

“The sensors were.” He narrowed his eyes. The punks really did put those tiny technological marvels to the test. “But the, yes, I suppose you could call them brain hats, I do not know the durability rating off the top of my head. This would be the first field study in which I would be using them.”

He had worked on the team that published “Neurotransmitter Specific, Cellular-Resolution Functional Brain Mapping Using Receptor Coated Nanoparticles” but that didn’t use the mobile scanners. They did all of that work in the lab itself.

Aarne felt worried about Isamu's sensors. "This will be ...worse."

Where could he start discussing what he could see happening. "How do they stay on?"

Aarne pressed down on all his fluffy hair and tried to imagine some of the people with hats on. They were going to hate them ruining their hair.

“The device I am considering fits rather like an open-faced balaclava.”

In other words, they would definitely smoosh spiked or even fluffy hair.

There may be other designs that he wasn’t familiar with. IRIS technology was always improving and expanding, as one would expect with access to a nearly infinite number of dimensions. And he might still be able to program the same sensors he used before for this experiment.

“This is all still hypothetical at this point.” He reiterated.

"A what?"

Aarne wasn't sure what a balaclava was. However, it did seem like a head covering of some sort.

"I want to have a party." Aarne was going to have this party with or without whatever Isamu was considering.

“A balaclava is a form of cloth headgear that leaves the face exposed. It…” isamu began, but Minoru interrupted.

“Bro, I think you’ll just have to get what you get at a party.” He chuckled. “Isn’t that what you said during the rockstar study thing? They had to forget they were wearing the sensors before you knew you could really trust your data.”

Isamu sighed. Minoru was surprisingly insightful there. Trying to study altered states of consciousness, especially ones that came about organically, was not going to be an easy task. Knowing you were being studied might impede the states entirely.

Aarne started to giggle as he imagined some people's reactions to being told they had to put a big thing on their heads. Lars and Gilly would certainly have something to say along with a few others.

"Is there something less... intrusive?" Aarne asks when he realizes that having a big thing on their heads would preclude a lot of activity probably. "We could put it on a couple days before then?"

Aarne was thinking more practically about people yanking them off or smashing them. These seemed bigger than the little patches that they wore before.

Isamu glanced between Aarne and his brother.

“Let me do some further investigation at how well the sensors can be tuned for collecting this sort of data. Or if I can utilize other devices that would be less noticeable but still provide the same data quality.” He acquiesced. “I am pleased that you would be willing to participate in my experiment, and will take your suggestions into account when I create my proposal.”

There were processes he had to follow, after all.

Aarne is excited about all of this. "I have a party to plan."

This was the best ever and they could have a Nordic party. There were so many Norse now it was going to get exciting. "I'll tell you when we're ready."

Experiment or not, the twins would be invited, quite possibly dragged into the madness.
