Welcome Committee

There's been so many fresh faces to the Nexus recently, and more than a few of them have been children. Questions about finding a way home, about trying to decide if they want to go home. People wondering what to do now...

There are a few tables set out this morning in the Plaza in front of a small cafe loaded with several caraffes of coffee, breakfast pastries from more than a few different worlds and cultures, and a large pan of eggs and sausage kept warm over a chafing dish. On either end of the table are disposable plates, cups, and cutlery as well as a few welcome pamphlets in a small container. Along the front of the tables is a hand made banner.

"Meet and Greet"

Manning the tables is Katsuya Suou, red apron on and a cup of coffee in hand. He looks far too cheerful for how early in the morning it is.

"Right then, is anyone hungry? Have any questions about the nexus?"

There is, admittedly, a part of him that bristles at the notion that magic is for children - but he doesn't act on it or let it show. It's an ingrained reaction from his time in Skyrim, where the locals tend to distrust magic and mages, to denounce it as trickery and something only the weak resort to- but he knows that isn't what Rosco meant by his comment.

"Yes, I suppose it does."

"So, probably there is at least a bit of magic there," Rosco concludes. "There's certainly plenty of stories and traditions about it."
drehnifusbahi: (*total sincerity*)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-11-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's entirely possible," he agrees. Though he can't help but think the concept is a bit sad - a world in which that's all that remains of magic.
rosco_coltrane: (confused)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2016-11-27 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose it doesn't matter," Rosco says, with a sigh. "Magic or not, things are as they are."
drehnifusbahi: (deep in thought)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-11-28 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose you're right," he replies, taking a long, slow sip of his coffee.
rosco_coltrane: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2016-12-01 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't suppose a place like the Nexus would work without magic."
drehnifusbahi: (Default)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-12-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"It's certainly difficult to imagine," he agrees. "Perhaps those from worlds with sufficiently advanced science and technology could still reach this place, even then. For the rest of us, though..."
rosco_coltrane: (Default)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2016-12-03 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, that would leave Hazzard out. We're an old-fashioned type of place," Rosco says with a giggle.
drehnifusbahi: (how can you not trust this face?)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-12-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That gets a chuckle out of him. "So is Tamriel, so I suppose we'd be left out as well."
rosco_coltrane: (listens)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2016-12-06 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
"That would be a shame," Rosco says, nodding. "Gotta admire the high tech worlds though, I think. Lot of places seem to have blown themselves to kingdom come or something, before getting there."
drehnifusbahi: (deep in thought)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-12-17 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The phrase 'blow themselves to kingdom come' can't help but put him in mind of the fate of the Dwemer. "The ones who manage not to do seem rather outnumbered, don't they?"
rosco_coltrane: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2016-12-22 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Rosco sighs.

"It's kinda depressing. It doesn't make us humans look too good."
drehnifusbahi: (deep in thought)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-12-22 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"It doesn't make any nonhumans who attempt it look terribly good either."

And then, by way of explanation, he adds, "In my world, there were the Dwemer - a race of elves whose society was far more technologically advanced than any of their contemporaries. They vanished almost four thousand years ago, and no society since has come anywhere close to their level in all that time. The more I learn about them, the more I think perhaps their example left everyone else afraid to even try."
rosco_coltrane: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2016-12-28 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Rosco nods, frowning a bit.

"Elves, really?" Rosco says, a bit interested. "Well, they oughta try again anyways. I mean, if you know what went wrong, you just avoid the mistake right?"
drehnifusbahi: (how can you not trust this face?)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2017-01-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"You'd think, wouldn't you?" He asks, with a slightly sardonic grin. "But even knowing where they went wrong doesn't help a great deal when they left so little behind concerning how their creations work. And while there are plenty of ruins... there are traps and the dwarves' own mechanical guards to contend with."
rosco_coltrane: (confused)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2017-01-03 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Well, you don't really need their stuff, do you? Don't you got people who can develop new things?"
drehnifusbahi: (*total sincerity*)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2017-01-06 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
"We do, but even they still tend to want to study the Dwemer's methods - if only to learn what not to do."
rosco_coltrane: (oooooing)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2017-01-07 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Rosco nods solemnly.

"Yeah, you got a good point there. You don't wanna accidentally blow stuff up."
drehnifusbahi: (deep in thought)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2017-01-10 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Definitely not."

Especially considering that that seems to be where the Dwemer went wrong.
rosco_coltrane: (confused)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2017-01-12 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I wonder if there's anything like that here? Everyone I've met so far is from some other place. No one seems to have been born here, at least, not that I've met."
drehnifusbahi: (deep in thought)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2017-01-19 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
"I haven't met any who were born here, either. People who've settled here permanently for whatever reason, yes, but no one who claimed to be a native..."
rosco_coltrane: (oooooing)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2017-01-19 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, shoot. I'm pretty much one of them!" Rosco says.
drehnifusbahi: (*concerned look*)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2017-01-20 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He cocks his head, curious. "You're a resident of the Nexus now, then? Well, welcome - however belated it might be."
rosco_coltrane: (explains)

[personal profile] rosco_coltrane 2017-01-21 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
"It wouldn't be right to set myself up as sheriff, otherwise," Rosco scolded gently. "A part time deputy is one thing. A sheriff is something else. Thank you for the welcome though."
drehnifusbahi: (*concerned look*)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2017-01-22 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He can't claim to truly understand that -the closest equivalent his own world has is the Legion, and they certainly don't have to be citizens of a place to set up command there- but he nods as if taking the point. "You're welcome."
