1st Annual Halloween Block Party!

Perhaps it's the leaves of fiery golds and oranges drifting on the breeze, or the sight of various hard squash being mangled into festive ornaments, or even still the bowls of candy left out simply everywhere in the Nexus that signifies the import of today. Regardless of when you take heed, Halloween has come to the Nexus.

Neat little handmade signs and fliers of all kinds lead to a particularly festive sectioned off block with the Crossroads Cafe at the center. The brick building has more than its fair share of decorations hung from every available windowsill and door. Hanging skeletons, jolly Jack-O-Lanterns, orange and black streamers cascading down and blowing to and fro in the crisp breeze.

The doors are propped open just waiting to beckon you inside. What are you waiting for?

((See the OOC post if you have any questions! Backtagging and threadhopping are fine. Come on in and have a blast :D ))

Friendly might be a bit of a stretch among the people who know him, but he's always in a better mood when he's consumed a double or two. She also has caught him after he's finished carving his Jack-o-lantern and sent the video of lighting it up to Joanna, so, there's even a vague feeling of accomplishment.

"I don't come here very much, but between the two of us, I think we'll be able to find the refreshments."

With that qualifier offered, he will take her arm and lead her vaguely in the direction he saw Katsuya bring his drink from earlier. It has them heading towards the cafe. Steadiness isn't a problem because he's not that inebriated, but not tripping over her shoes could pose a problem.

Hope likes his optimism, that between the two of them they'll be able to find their way. Four eyes tend to be better than just the two, and, if the going gets really rough they can always stop and ask for directions.

With her arm linked with his she has a bit more stability, but there she is, waddling back and forth in the Tramp shuffle, comical, friendly - a child in clothes thrown on from a dress up box. There are only a few times that she actually trips, the bottom of the shoe getting caught on a stone or under foot, her gaze and attention being drawn away by a fantastic costume. And even those missteps turn out to be rather graceful, her balance and dexterity are impressive.

Eventually she sees a gathering, a sort of wide, sloppy queue and she points over to it after a tug to his sleeve. There, perhaps?

Yep. Good eyesight, lady. There happens to be a line full of people waiting at a stand for drinks. Right there. Leonard's got 20/20 vision, but in the dusk at this distance, he's not sure he would have realized that the ahead collection of people was where they belonged.

"Seems like the right place to me too."

By the grace of who knows what, Bone's has managed not to trip on the floppy shoes. Not so far, anyway. He's not willing to rule out that it won't happen in the future, but likely not while the stand in a line.

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-11-02 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Once in the mass that is the line for drinks, she stretches slightly, back arching slightly before turning her attention back to the gentleman at hand. At hand. That's funny.

She had just walked off with him, it had seemed so easy, so simple. There never seems to be any sort of internal warning system with her, just - go. Just - do. Never is there a thought that this person might wish to do her harm. The thought strikes her now, random, idle, like wondering if she had remembered to do something trivial.

"My name is Hope," because it's not always easy to get to know someone when you don't speak. "I am new here," and in general.

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-11-15 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
When you can do the kind of things that Hope can do, maybe that's the way you end up thinking. There aren't a lot of people where she's from who would be able to match her physicality, so, why worry if someone intended to do you wrong? You could simply handle them the way you would anyone else who stepped out of line.

She could certainly handle this country doctor without any trouble. It so happens that she won't have to worry about that from Bones. The CMO took a vow to do no harm and he meant every word when he said it.

"I'm Leonard." He says with a little bit of a drawl entering into his voice. Some semblance of southern gentility remains in him, even after going to a Yankee med school and living in space for years. "It's my pleasure to meet you, Ms. Hope."
hisideal: (laugh)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-11-15 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hi, Leonard!" That's a great name, a great accent too, she really likes it probably because it's very easy on the ear. "It's very nice to meet you too. Thank you for taking me in hand, so to speak, I don't know how long I could stand around looking silly before just melting into space." Hope laughs at that but really, she feels so much better having someone to talk to - it's hard being new.

"Where are you from? Do you live here?" The line is slow moving but whenever someone leaves the queue they all sort of shuffle forward.
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc is Sorta Smiling)

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-11-15 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think between the smile and the choice of costume you were destined not to fade into the background."

It is hard to be social at a party going as someone who doesn't speak. As much fun as their pantomime was, he's thankful that she'll talk to him. It's a party. And the truth is, he doesn't get out much.

"I live everywhere." He says with a half-hearted shrug. "I'm from Georgia, USA on Earth originally. What about you?"
hisideal: (smile in sun)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-11-15 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
He is rewarded with another one of those perfected smiles while her cheeks color pink and she drops her gaze in embarrassment. "Thank you," she manages through the blush. "I was born smiling my mom used to say, so I've had a few years to really get it right."

It certainly wasn't made that way, no sir.

"Metropolis, USA on Earth." Since he gave his address as such she figures that she might do the same. When she realizes how many different types of people there are here she will understand the smarts of this. "It sounds like you travel a lot? I've heard that Georgia is beautiful but I've not been there myself."
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc is Sorta Smiling)

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-14 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
She has a beautiful blush response. It's smooth and even on both sides of her face and a fetching color besides. The smile speaks for itself. It's ... been a while since he's made a woman light up light this.

Leonard ducks his head bashfully.

"I get out there." He says when he lifts his head again, nodding in that way that seems almost like he doesn't believe what he's saying. "Waaaay out there."

"As far as Georgia is concerned, I came from a little place that was probably too small for it's own good. Everybody knew everybody and so it felt sort of ... claustrophobic when I was teenager. I was happy to head off to college at a certain point."

Is he rambling? Talking too much about himself? He should ask her a question ...

"Uhm. What's Metropolis like?"
hisideal: (chin on fist)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-12-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Leaning against the bar she watches him with that smile and those eyes that say that he's the most fascinating person in this place. A gaze that never waivers to look else where at a flash of light or a glimpse of costume. Her attention is devoted to him.

"That sounds like a set up for a joke, how waaayyy out there is it?" Hope laughs even without knowing the punchline.

A nod, another nod of understanding. "Metropolis is not like that, it's a massive city, there's a sort of anonymity to it all. Except for the neighborhood you live in, if you stick around the area everyone gets to know you." It used to happen a lot more ages ago, but with people always coming and going it's not quite the same.

"What did you study in college?"
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc is Sorta Smiling)

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-20 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Space." He says with a scratch of the hair on his dark head. He hopes she's from a place where interstellar travel is plausible otherwise the rest of this conversation is going to be awkward. "I travel through the vastness of deep space for my work."

"I studied medicine." He hopes that's going to impress her and he's not all that sure why. It might have something to do with the fact that she's lovely and he doesn't chat up a lot of women that he already know. That makes chatting up this girl a kind of rare experience for Bones. "Did you uh ... are you in college or have you graduated?"
hisideal: (wine)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-12-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Wow!" The bartender has finally gotten around to them and Hope orders a glass of red wine rather than some seasonal drink with too much sugar in it. "My boss, Doctor Luthor, is all about space exploration. I've never been, hopefully that's not a forever statement. I'd really like to go."

This was a comment given in profile after she put in her order, when the glass of wine is put down on the bar Hope turns to Bones again. "So you're a doctor? That's really wonderful, general medicine or specialized?" Space medicine? That's not a thing, it should be though, actually wouldn't that just be an astrophysicist?

There goes that blush to her cheeks again and she gives a slow shake of her head. "No, no, I've never been to college. I just work."
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc says 'Say What')

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-21 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hey, drinks. That's what they were standing in line for, wasn't it? You would have thought in all this time that Bones would have been preparing a drink order when he was standing in line for one, but no. He hadn't been. So there's a expectant look coming from the bartender that is pretty rapidly disolving into frustration with the Starfleet doctor.

"I'll take a whiskey straight up."

At least it's something that's relatively easy to pour. When Bones has his drink, he holds out his arm so that they two can link as walk off to section of the part that's a little less densely populated.

"General medicine and general surgury," he explains. "I work on a ship with a large crew so I need to be prepared for almost anything."

When he gives her a chance to digest that information, which isn't that long - see seems to be keeping up with him just fine and isn't blown away by the idea of space travel. "What do you do for Doctor Luthor?"

One glass of wine in hand, one bucket of candy on her wrist she loops her arm with his and presses close before shuffling off with him (remember: big floppy shoes). If they pass an open table with two seats she will gently suggest taking a seat there, or maybe they have open couches and over stuffed chairs like in some coffee shops. She has always thought that was so cool.

"That makes a lot of sense. Do you have to know any alien physiology? That is if you've encountered any alien species," maybe there isn't any in his universe but she finds that highly doubtful.

A sip of wine at the question because she isn't entirely sure how to answer it. "Ah," a lick of the lips and then she presses them together. "Well, he's given me the chance to help fight crime in Metropolis so that's what I do."
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc is Thinking)

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-22 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
He will keep her and her big floppy shoes steady with his sturdy frame. If there's one thing anyone following Jim Kirk teaches a person - which he's been doing since his academy days - it's how to keep a person steady.

"Non-human physiology is part of standard medical curriculum where I come from." He says with a slow nod of his head. "And we have half-human and non-humans on the crews of most Starfleet ships."

He's insanely curious as to what the breathtaking girl dressed in a peculiar halloween costume does for a living. Crime fighting ... is not what he pictured at all. "So you work in law enforcement?"
hisideal: (blue shoulder shy quiet)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-12-22 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"That is so, so cool! I know there are aliens on earth now but the ones we tend to hear about put on super suits and save the day. In your earth we're you born when alien species were already well known or was first contact made in your life time?" Basically, are aliens normal for him?

With him holding her up she gently nudges him toward an open couch. "Lets sit! I may take my shoes off if it's not too rude," but maybe not she doesn't know how polite or impolite it would be to do so.

"Um," that makes her pause in thought. "Kind of, independent law enforcement I suppose. I mean they do the real hard work I just help out, I take on some of the bigger stuff that they might not be able to handle."
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc is Thinking)

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-23 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, we'd had contact with aliens before I was born. I grew up in a civilization where you were going to meet at least a few in your lifetime - even if you stayed on earth." The ho-hum of his tone suggests that meeting non-humans is nothing exciting for him.

As if to suggest that he is in accords with idea of sitting, he also starts walking toward the couch. "Oh, feel free to lose to shoes. They seem hard to walk around in."

The doctor settles himself on the couch next to Hope and continues. "I'm afraid you're going to have to go into more depth about your earth. Supersuits and what it is you do I'm kind of having a little trouble grasping."
hisideal: (chin on shoulder)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-12-23 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"That is so cool," she breathes, clearly, impressed and excited by this revelation. If he is from the future of her Earth that means that aliens become even more common and that makes her super happy.

Laughing, Hope puts the pumpkin full of candy on the coffee table in front of the couch before slipping off her shoes and sitting down on the couch cross legged, glass of wine still in hand. A sip of wine and she turns herself so she can face the Doctor.

"Um, there are people in my world with super powers," gosh this is oddly hard to do because it will involve talking about herself. "Meaning they have abilities beyond normal human abilities, or they have enhanced abilities. Like, there are people who can fly, can see through buildings, or lift a car up and over their head. I can do some of those things too."
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc says 'Say What')

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-23 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh."

You'll have to forgive him, Hope. Superpowers aren't really a thing where he's from. Genetic enhancement produced Khan, but he wouldn't quite equate him with a superhero.

"Like in those old ..." really, really old "... comicbooks."
hisideal: (wine)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-12-23 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
When he mentions comic books, those brown eyes widen and she sets the glass of wine she has been nursing aside on the coffee table. "Yes!" She knows comic books, they have them in her world too, still she should probably clarify.

"Like Superman? Have you read comic books about him?" Because of course The Man of Steel would have his own comic book. "Or The Flash? Someone who can go supernaturally fast? They use their super powers for good, or, I guess for evil too. Depending on the person."
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc Doesn't Believe You)

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-30 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"So people where you're from really have superpowers?"

She could be crazy, but even in his limited time in the Nexus, he's heard crazier. Besides the fact that he doesn't seem to think that she is - most people who are mentally ill have symptoms that you can pick up on, if you know what to look for.

"I didn't really read them, I have to admit. There was a Superwoman, I think? Maybe an Ultraman?" It wasn't his thing when he was a kid. Bones wanted to play basketball when he was a teenager and hung out with jocks before he ended up in med school.
hisideal: (bunny mask)

[personal profile] hisideal 2016-12-30 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she picks up on his skepticism or maybe she just knows how she sounds to people who don't live in Metropolis and so she hurries to defend herself. "Yes, but not everyone. It's not an entirely common thing where I am from."

A drink of her wine (really, she should probably stop that) and she sets the glass aside on the coffee table, getting ready to stand.

"I could show you, if you'd like." Not that she has any really wild and cool powers (comparatively speaking.)
shetooktheplanet: (The Doc says 'Say What')

[personal profile] shetooktheplanet 2016-12-30 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If he knew her better, he'd know how out of character it is for Hope to show off her superpowers - after all this is the perfect ten woman who came to the Halloween party covered from head to toe in her costume. Is it the wine or the fact that there were faint notes of skepticism in the doctor's voice when she claimed superpowers ...

"I'd find a demonstration fascinating." He says, taking a sip own his own drink. "Providing you can do it safely."

Yeah, this is not an all the time thing, in fact she feels kind of embarrassed standing up and brushing off the front of her baggy pants as if psyching herself up for this act. But she wants to be believed, she wants to establish a sort of trust between them that when she tells him something that something is true.

A little push off the ground and she rises about five feet in the air before doing a very Chaplin-esque walk away from him twirling the cane she brought for just such an occasion. A pant hitch at the end before and a few more steps before she turns around to head back with the same kind of waddle walk.

Well, whatever Bones was expecting in terms of a display of superpowers ... it wasn't that. There was power involved, that much is true. It was pretty super, even. But. It was also extraordinarily silly.

Whether it's the drinks or the fact that he's so often stuck in the mode of being the serious one, the doctor finds himself laughing.

"I have to admit I've never seen anyone do that before."
