1st Annual Halloween Block Party!

Perhaps it's the leaves of fiery golds and oranges drifting on the breeze, or the sight of various hard squash being mangled into festive ornaments, or even still the bowls of candy left out simply everywhere in the Nexus that signifies the import of today. Regardless of when you take heed, Halloween has come to the Nexus.
Neat little handmade signs and fliers of all kinds lead to a particularly festive sectioned off block with the Crossroads Cafe at the center. The brick building has more than its fair share of decorations hung from every available windowsill and door. Hanging skeletons, jolly Jack-O-Lanterns, orange and black streamers cascading down and blowing to and fro in the crisp breeze.
The doors are propped open just waiting to beckon you inside. What are you waiting for?
((See the OOC post if you have any questions! Backtagging and threadhopping are fine. Come on in and have a blast :D ))

Jim's known Leonard as long as the other's known him, and makes a pretty good impression of the grumpy CMO when he's got a mind to be particularly irritating. Jim's already folding his arms stiffly in front of him, irritation clear on his face.
"It's a costume party, Bones. I didn't have to define that to friggin Spock for crying out loud why are you being diffi---" Jim snaps his mouth shut quick enough to leave an audible clack at the chuckle threatening to radiate off of his best friend. He's scowling before he can tell himself not to because it's probably the exact response Bones wants from him.
"Yeah well, my date seems to think so." HUFF.

Because they both know that he didn't really care about whether he was going to be late to the multiverse Halloween party. It was like pulling teeth just to get him to leave the Enterprise, though he's secretly happy for the change of scenery.
"You're acting like I'm being glib, but I am so tremendously happy I got to come and see you ..." He gestures with a vertical wave of his hand. "... in that."

poutingscowling isn't going to win Len over and both of them know it. But there's a certain principle of the thing that says Jim has to at least gripe a little bit because his best friend is clearly trying to defeat the entire purpose of a costume party by going as himself but not terrified of the Nexus like the worrywart he is.Frankly, he's just grateful Bones agreed to come at all. He doesn't get to do enough with his friends off duty. It feels almsot like old times back at the Academy, being at a party together like this.
"It was supposed to be something out of Felix's world, but I don't ever remember seeing this much frill on any of the folks I ran into there." He lifts a sleeve as proof of said frill as though it's not everywhere. "But I got a very warm reception for it, so it's worth the hassle. Besides, you should have seen what I wore last year."

Put these legendary hands to use in something that was going to actually relax him for a change. Mending Starfeet crew was necessary, but not at all relaxing.
"I don't recommend wearing the costume on the ship Jim. Besides the obvious reason of the crew never letting you live it down, that much frill could get caught in something while you're working."

Another smaller pumpkin gets plucked up from the nearby counter and Jim starts idly dragging a pencil across it to make his own design.
"You gotta put something on before we send the pictures to Jo. She'll love it."
no subject
"We'll have to find candles or some way to light them up when we're finished too."
no subject
There is no real arrogance in the statement, just the softest snort from Jim as he works on making sure the triangle eyes he's sketching out on this thing are level. Gotta go for a classic here. It will make the butterfly Leonard is making stand out all the more and plus Jim can't really screw up a design this simple.
"I'm sure Officer Stick-Up-His-Ass will be happy to help so long as I'm not the one who asks."
Jim gives the mouth an errant snagletooth to make its grin look even more dopey before he nods and sets the pencil aside.
"What's she going as this year? Did you get a chance to talk to her?"
no subject
If Bones was supposed to know who in the blue blazes Jim is talking about, then consider him out of touch. It wouldn't be the first time. He sets down an exacto knife that he's been carving with to shake out his hand.
"She went as little Little Red Riding Hood. Joce dressed as the Grandmother." Don't ask him about who the big bad wolf is, that topic will only piss him off. It's not him, obviously. "She left me a message. Showed me her costume and showed me some of the pictures she'd been drawing."
no subject
Jim reaches for a knife to cut out the top of his pumpkin.
"I'm sure he'd give us candles to display these bad boys though. Since it's an attraction at his party and all."
Joanna's costume makes Jim smile all the more again while he works quietly next to his best friend. She'd look adorable in an outfit like that, Jim's certain. He wishes not for the first time he could get Bones more time with his little girl.
"So, you're saying we should make you the wolf or the hunter?"
no subject
It hasn't been taking Leonard all that long to work on the jack-o-lantern that he's been carving. He has good hands, after all, and has spent much of his time at the part uninterrupted because people aren't all that familiar with who he is. He also doesn't have a disposition that says 'hey come talk to me' either. The doctor is much more of a talk at your own risk sort of man.
"I think she's trick or treating with someone dressed as the wolf, so the hunter seems like the best choice."
no subject
Really prepping it takes the most work. Scooping out the insides and all.Jim is careful to roll up his sleeve when he does that part. Normally he wouldn't be careful but these aren't his digs and he does have to return them after tonight.
"....Is saving the grandma optional then?" His knee knocks into Leonard's gently even as the words are out of his mouth, to assure the other that he's joking. Jim's opinion of Jocelyn has always been a bit skewed since he only ever hears about her when Bones has to vent to someone about something or other she'd done. That hasn't happened much since their first year at the academy when Bones was still climbing out of his alcohol fueled depression, but Jim's fiercely loyal and his loyalties liem squarely with Bones.

With Bones often beating himself up so much, it's a good to have the guy that's in his corner no matter what. He doesn't let on how much it means to him, but with Jim, he doesn't really have to. His friend knows him through and through.
"I think Jo is probably a little young to be a junior officer, so we might have to have 'grandma' around for a few more years yet."
no subject
Jim is quick to point the knife he had been pointing at Bones to illustrate his point anywhere else before he gets lectured about safety and being an idiot. As soon as he'd done it he could feel the look that would be coming, so away it goes to be inserted into the pumpkin instead to get on with carving out this goofy face he'd drawn.
One of these days Jim's going to put that PINpoint of his to use and figure out the coordinates that will get them to Georgia so Bones can see his little girl. Ideally wihtout Jocelyn breathing down his neck for the entire visit. Hell, he could bring Jo to the Nexus or even the ship for an afternoon if he wanted to. Or Jim would be happy to lend him the keys to his family home in Iowa. He wants bones to be able to see his little girl and, truthfully? Jim wants to meet her too.
Whatever Bones has been saying has gone in one ear and out the other with the sudden 'I'm scheming something' face Jim has adopted for the last minute.

If he find himself having to medically stabilize someone at this party, it better not be because of something stupid. Frankly, it would be nice to relax and not play doctor for a while.
That said, if they could adapt some nexus tech to get Leonard a little more time with his daughter? He'd be perfectly alright with that. Mixing technology of different worlds comes with an inherent volatility, but if you look at advances through the last couple of centuries ... a lot of it came from learning what other sentients had and modifying/refining it for another use.
He'd do just about anything for his little girl.
no subject
But then where would the fun in that be?
"What do you think?" Jim pokes out the last little chunk of pumpkin he'd cut out with a wiggle of his finger before turning it so bones can see. Now, Jim is rubbish at this sort of thing. Wrapping gifts, remembering occasions. It's quite obvious he wasn't exposed to 'happy celebrations' much as a kid. But he's made a genuine effort here and all for a girl he's never met.
"Think she'll smile? It'll make yours look even better I think."
no subject
"I think that we have a fine pair of jack-o-lanterns, Captain."
There's a part of Leonard that will always feel a little broken up about the way things turned out with Jocelyn. They weren't meant to be together, that much was clear after a while. It stings, though, knowing he can't give his daughter that happy union of her two parents.
But he does what he can. His efforts must be working on some level because she always seems happy in the videos she sends to him.
"I think so." Leonard explains that, "the last picture that she drew me was a butterfly."
no subject
Jim claps his best friend on the shoulder and grins brightly enough to light up the place all on his own. He's excited by the opportunity to make Bones' little girl happy and doubly so to be helping in said endeavor. He'll lead Leonard back to the coat room that doubles as spare costumes and props and accessories so he can begin shuffling through the boxes and racks.
"She's gonna be so happy her dad dressed up as the huntsman. Joining in on her theme. Being there for her...as much as you can be." It's his fault Bones can't go back and see her. Jim knows it is. He'll just have to make sure he figures out the PINpoints enough to make them able to visit. He's bound and determined to, now.
