There's been so many fresh faces to the Nexus recently, and more than a few of them have been children. Questions about finding a way home, about trying to decide if they want to go home. People wondering what to do now...

There are a few tables set out this morning in the Plaza in front of a small cafe loaded with several caraffes of coffee, breakfast pastries from more than a few different worlds and cultures, and a large pan of eggs and sausage kept warm over a chafing dish. On either end of the table are disposable plates, cups, and cutlery as well as a few welcome pamphlets in a small container. Along the front of the tables is a hand made banner.

"Meet and Greet"

Manning the tables is Katsuya Suou, red apron on and a cup of coffee in hand. He looks far too cheerful for how early in the morning it is.

"Right then, is anyone hungry? Have any questions about the nexus?"

Rosco nods.

"I've only been here a month or so. I plan on mostly staying and just visiting where I'm from."

"I'd probably do the same if I could; there's so much to explore here." There might be something a touch wistful in his expression for a moment there, but it's gone in the blink of an eye.

"But I've too much on my plate at home. Still, I'm happy to help however I can while I'm here."

"What do you do on your home world, if you don't mind me asking?" Rosco says, curious. "Quite a few here seem to come from worlds that are a bit wrecked."

Now there's a question. "Hunt monsters and break up bandit rings, mostly. I did recently stop a vampire lord from trying to blot out the sun and a god-dragon from bringing about the end of the world, though."

He sighs, admittedly a touch dramatically. "I thought that might be the end of the madness for a little while, but it seems I'm not that lucky."

Rosco's eyes widen in surprise.

"If ya gotta have nobility, you might not want to let them be vampires," Rosco advises. "They're uppity enough without having evil powers. Ooo, that does sound like a rough time. I'm sure things won't be quite that...intense, here. I hope not, anyways."

He simply nods, accepting that bit of advice. It was plenty true in Harkon's case, and the only thing stopping the rest of the clan from being as bad was a lack of power in comparison.

"It generally isn't, thanks to the anti-violence field. Odd things still happen from time to time, but they're not usually harmful things."

Rosco nods.

"I'm glad of that. This place is strange enough and hard to adjust to. The fear of violence could turn it into a powder keg."

"And unfortunately, I can think of a few folk I've seen around here who might not be averse to... ah, fanning the flames." He's thinking primarily of Nekomata and her ilk (he hasn't forgotten the horde she brought through when the anti-violence field was temporarily brought down).

"Well, those types are everywhere. Most places, at least," Rosco grumbles. Fortunately, those types are rare in Hazzard. Even the criminal elements there don't tolerate actual violence. "Still, even without violence, people will find ways to be rotten to each other. That's why we need law in place."

He's really a firm believer in law and order, despite his own shady dealings in Hazzard.

Those words -people will find ways to be rotten to each other- strike a chord in him. He doesn't share Rosco's firm belief in law and order, offered to join his fledgling peace-keeping squad because it's become a reflex by now to help wherever it's needed. But that...

"Yes, that's very true."

"Yeah. Kinda sad really. I mean, of course, not everyone can get along, but you'd think as communities, we could do better by each other."

"You would, wouldn't you?" He can't help but think of the war, the damage still being wrought because neither side can bring themselves to agree with the other.

"But in my experience, even when being better to others would be in their own best interests, some people just... won't."

Rosco thinks of Boss Hogg and gives a reluctant sigh. He refuses to consider how this conversation applies to himself.

"Yeah, that's true all over the place, I guess."

Vanyel tries his best, but the Divines know there are a few people he wouldn't piss on if they were on fire. In most of those cases, he likes to think it's a justifiable reaction to extreme provocation.

"I suppose people aren't so different no matter what world they come from."

"I suppose not," Rosco agrees. "Well, at least that means there's generally good around, as well as bad."

Rosco doesn't have any enemies that deserve that. His most constant enemies are the Dukes and it'd break his heart, if anything truly bad happened to them.

He considers that for a moment, then nods. "That it does."

Not so surprising, perhaps; Vanyel's enemies tend to be along the lines of world-devouring dragon gods and mad vampire lords.

"You must like the Nexus, though, since you keep coming back," Rosco speculates. "What kinda things to do you do for fun here?"

He nods, conceding the point. "I've made friends here that I visit with, and I do a fair amount of exploring as well. There's a great deal to see, alchemy ingredients and spell tomes I wouldn't have access to back home."

"Dang. There's a lot of magic folks here," Rosco said. "I'm glad you and Stratos know this stuff. I ain't used to magic being used in crimes."

"Yours is a world without magic, then?" Even after all this time spent in the Nexus, the concept still seems so strange to him, and he can't help but be curious.

"Well, uh, I think so," Rosco says. "Some people claim otherwise, but I've never seen any done."

"There probably isn't, then - I don't imagine it could be hidden completely, if it were there." (No, he hasn't ever read Harry Potter, why do you ask?)

"Well, there are people who claim to do magic," Rosco explains further. "And odd stuff does happen sometimes. It's just most folk don't believe in it and explain it off as something else."

"Oh?" His brows twitch up, but his expression is one of curiosity, rather than disbelief. "Well that's interesting. Maybe, then..." He still isn't quite sure what would make all the mages hide away, but... it might be interesting to try to find out, someday.

Rosco shrugs.

"I never really believed in magic," Rosco says, not being completely honest, even with himself. "I always thought is was just something for kids, but since being here. Well, the concept had to have come from something, right?"
