nexus_crossings | Time for a big ol' Nexus Block party

On a sleepy summer morning a wonderful smell begins to waft throughout the Nexus. For those familiar with this place there can only be one explanation but for those new faces to the nexus this may be a strange thing: seeing so many people flocking toward the sweet and savory scents perfuming the Nexus.

There are a few tables set out this morning in the Plaza in front of a small cafe loaded with several carafes of coffee, a myriad of pastries from more than a few different worlds and cultures, and a large pan of eggs and sausage kept warm over a chafing dish. On either end of the table are disposable plates, cups, and cutlery as well as a few welcome pamphlets in a small container. Along the front of the tables is a hand made banner.

Meet and Greet

Manning the tables is Katsuya Suou, red apron on and a cup of coffee in hand. He looks far too cheerful for how early in the morning it is. It's always satisfying to put one of these on and see the throngs of different people stuck in line together to get their food and find a place to sit among the tables and couches nearby.

"Right then, is anyone hungry? I've got more than enough here for everyone so please mingle among yourselves or feel free to ask me anything you'd like."

"He must sense that." Hermione is glad that Viatorus is not bothered by the Kneazle in his lap.

"He is very content."

"He is. Not all cats are as bold as him. I'm glad he's able to feel comfortable around a stranger." Viatorus strokes the kitten a little more. "Sometimes my cat like to watch people for a while before she makes her decision."

"He does hang around the Gryffindor common rooms, 'where dwell the brave at heart'," Hermione takes a seat near Viatorus. Her familiar is content right now, so there is no point in disturbing him from the cat nap, or the pets.

"I'm Hermione Jean Granger. And the little fuzz ball is CJ. I don't believe we have met before." She smiles.

There's a name he doesn't recognise and a motto for a common room (which seems an utterly bizarre concept) but he smiles and nods all the same. It's almost a given that he won't understand all of what's being said to him in the Nexus, and that's always a risk with his family too, so this is nothing new. He's used to smiling and nodding until he figures out what's going on.

"Viatorus Atlas Durant." He offers a hand along with his name. "Nice to meet you, Miss Granger, and CJ."

Hermione accepts the handshake with a smile. CJ purrs louder. "Nice to meet you Viatorus."

"What were you working on before CJ decided you would make an excellent sleeping spot?"

"Oh, just some sketches. Nothing important. It's just an exercise I do every now and them. It helps me with my work, because sometimes I want to draw something I only saw a glimpse of. That happens a lot in crowds too, which is why I was doing a bit now."

"What kind of work are you employed in?" Hermione asks curiously.

'Employed in'. That makes him sound so normal! Viatorus beams, rocking slightly in his seat as he enjoys the pleasantly unusual feeling of being considered one of the common people.

"I'm a magical consultant, and a researcher. Dreamwalking is my speciality."

"You are? Quite exciting." Another magic user. Hermione is excited.

"I am a magic user. Right now, I am vying for the position of Minister of Magic for Britain."

"My specialties are Arthimancy, Charms and Potions."

"Minister for Magic?" That sounds impressive. "I've never heard of mages incorporating themselves officially into governments before. That must be interesting, and difficult."

"In my world, there are enough magical people that we have our own government. And those governments work at the national level with other representatives."

"We have limited interaction with the non-magical government, but I want to improve relations." Hermione explained.

Trying to imagine that happening in his world is… difficult. He knows so little of what actually goes on in magical politics, but he's pretty sure trying to get magical families to agree to adhere to the wishes of a government wouldn't go down well.

Viatorus smiles slightly anyway. "We don't have that. An independent government I mean. I know we do keep relations good with governments, but we're not allowed to meddle in politics. My family, at least, we're hired as magical consultants, but we can't be hired to influence politics."

"It does not sound like you have the same population of magically-gifted people that my world does. We do have to abide by the International Statue of Wizarding Secrecy, as to not let the non-magical people know of our presence. But the wizarding community is large enough that we have our own subdivisions of communities."

"We don't consult with non-magical people much anymore."

"We might not have the biggest population, but we do have plenty of subdivisions. Perhaps too many..." He tilts his head. "Why don't you consult with non-magical people anymore?"

"It goes back to the 1600s. The wizarding society used to associate with the non-magical society all the time. And unfortunately, a few non-magical people tried to take advantage of the wizarding folk. Things got tense. Wizards cast spells to protect themselves. Non-magical people resorted to violence, actually killing others."

Hermione frowns. "But now that we have so many wizards being born from non-magical people, times must change."

"Oh." Viatorus goes quiet for a minute and looks down at the kitten on his lap. "That makes sense, I suppose."

"I am a Muggleborn myself. Neither of my parents have magic." Hermione notes softly.

"I hope I can improve Wizarding-Muggle relations."

Muggleborn. Another new term. It doesn't sound all that kind, either.

"I hope you can too."

"I am glad I had the chance to met another magic-user in the Nexus, Viatorus." Hermione smiles.

"CJ..." She softly calls her cat's name. He looks up, and stretches from his quick nap. Then jumps over to her. "I am glad you made a friend too."
